Welcome, everyone!
My name is Mackenzie Ferns. Although some of you may know me as Paleolithic Mama. I am a mother to two gorgeous boys, I’m a loving spouse to a very phenomenal man, and if we want to get the technical labels I’m also a certified Paleo Nutritionist and a Certified Culinary Nutrition Expert. My family and I reside in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island BC.
Like most people who are just starting out on their health journey, I dove in head first and I can assure you I wasn’t doing it properly. When I say that, I really mean it because my idea of what “healthy” was turned out to be ridiculously unrealistic. I’ve had an ongoing battle with food for a very long time. I went from being an emotional eater as a child to becoming a very strict, conscientious eater as an adult. One thing they both have in common? None of it was based on the fundamentals of proper and wholesome nutrition nor did it come from a healthy place. At that point in my life, that wasn’t what mattered to me. It was all about quick fixes, fast results, magical tea blends that flattened your tummy, counting calories and over exercising to the point of complete exhaustion.
By the time I gave birth to my first born I was introduced to the Paleo lifestyle and up until today, nearly 3.5 years later I have been enthusiastically maintaining and committed to it as well a diet revolving around around real, wholesome and natural foods. It wasn’t always easy but over time I learned the true value of good nutrition, not only for me but for my kids. I tried my damned hardest to focus on all the foods I could have instead of the foods I couldn’t! With that I had a new found love for cooking; I had never spent so much time in my kitchen.
Living this lifestyle helped me grow in so many wonderful ways. With it I had two healthy pregnancies as well as uncomplicated and natural births. It’s abetted me to manage my anxiety in a safe and non-conventional way. The wholesome food I was consuming truly nurtured both of my recoveries in my postpartum journeys and as an added bonus, helped me shed my post baby weight and my stubborn pre-baby weight. The Paleo diet has been generously beneficial for me but it’s not my only nutritional bible. I truly agree that above all, we listen to our bodies; not one of us is the same and what might work for one might not for another. I encourage all my clients to have an open mind and welcome all possibilities. We as humans are all individually biochemically made and I treat all my clients as such! We all start somewhere; whether you are here reading this as a certified practitioner, an aspiring nutritionist, as someone who is in need of nutritional guidance or as someone who is looking to learn some new tricks and tips on their health journey.
It’s important for me to help build a community with those who are looking to take the leap of faith in leading a healthier way of life. I want to humbly share with the upmost dignity all of my victories and challenges in my own journey, my passage through navigating motherhood as a realist, and of course to share my knowledge with those who are as curious as I am when it comes to bettering ourselves in the most wholesome way.
As a nutritionist I want my clients to know that I will commit to their goals as much as they do. I will be the motivation and strength they need to see their goals through. I always make sure my clients have a clear understanding to help them build their confidence in making healthier and more informed decisions. I pride myself in the connections I make and doing so in a organic and devoted way. Helping others light my soul on fire, I am always looking forward to help other take control of their health all while growing with them as a team.
