Probiotics: From Bump to Birth

I want to talk a bit about bacteria. No, not the bacteria that we fear cause harmful and deadly diseases. I’m talking the beneficial and monumentally helpful live bacteria that hang out in our bodies and help promote healthy digestive symptoms. Yep, Probiotics!

Probiotics are more so known for their role in balancing all of our good and bad bacteria in our bodies, they make sure everything is working the way it should. Probiotics are also used to maintain and restore all the good bacteria that are lost when we take medicine like antibiotics. These guys sit in first class when it comes to an all inclusive trip to an optimal immune system!

I didn’t know about probiotics until after my first son was born. He happened to be a very colicky baby with A LOT of gas. I did so much research on my diet and what foods could be affecting my breast milk and causing this gas and keep in mind I was strictly Paleo by then. After about 3 weeks or so of no sleep and endless hours of my poor new born crying due to the uncomfortable gas pain, we turned to probiotics. Not only was my little guy taking them.. I was too due to the fact that it’s known to reduce colic in infants while breastfeeding. The brand I use is called General Health Advanced Gut Health Probiotics and we used Bio Gaia Probiotic Drops for Lincoln which we also used with Theo as soon as he was born. Today both my boys use Dr. Formulated Children’s Probiotics as this brand is organic, non gmo, dairy free and gluten free.

Before us mama’s give birth, our babies immune systems lack all the important bacteria. These bacteria help make up their microbiome which produce the microbes they need for essential long term health. 30% of our babies gut bacteria come from our breast milk! If we take care of our own microbiome when we are pregnant and breastfeeding we are helping develop healthy immune systems for our little’s that provide the immune factors they need to mature their digestive system.

I could go on and on about the benefits both myself and my boys have received from consuming these bad boys daily, but allow me share some of the most common:

  • Improves mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, OCD and even autism.
  • May reduce the severity of allergies and eczema.
  • Reduces symptoms of certain digestive disorders.
  • They boost our immune systems.
  • They aid in weight-loss

Do you take probiotics? What are some of the benefits you’ve received? Do you have any questions? Id love to hear them! Leave a comment below.
